Moving to Spain
- Can I use Spanish state healthcare with an S1 as a UK pensioner? If you receive a UK State Pension and live in Spain, you can usually access Spanish public healthcare through an S1 certificate, with the UK covering the cost. Apply through NHS Overseas Healthcare Services, then register your S1 with Spain's National Social Security Institute (INSS). Once approved, you can obtain your regional health card and use public healthcare services on the same basis as Spanish residents. Eligibility depends on your circumstances, particularly if you also receive a pension from another country.
- What is the difference between an NIE and a TIE?The NIE is a tax identification number you need for financial transactions like buying a house or opening a bank account. The TIE is the biometric residency card that proves you have the right to live in Spain. As a British citizen post-Brexit, you'll need both: the NIE for admin, and the TIE for residency.
- What is the padrón and why do I need it?The padrón is Spain’s municipal register of who lives in each town. You need it because everyone living in Spain for more than three months must register with the town hall where they habitually live, and the certificate proves your address and residence for official procedures. It is not the same as legal residency or a TIE.
