The short answer
The NIE is a tax identification number you need for financial transactions like buying a house or opening a bank account. The TIE is the biometric residency card that proves you have the right to live in Spain. As a British citizen post-Brexit, you'll need both: the NIE for admin, and the TIE for residency.

The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is a unique tax and identification number assigned to foreigners. You need it for almost any official transaction: buying property, opening a bank account, signing a contract, setting up utilities. It does not give you the right to live in Spain – it's just a number.
The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is the biometric residency card for non-EU citizens, including British citizens since Brexit. It proves you have legal permission to reside in Spain. You apply for it after you've obtained a visa (or, if you were already resident before 1 January 2021, under the Withdrawal Agreement). The TIE must be renewed periodically.
The confusion arises because the NIE number is printed on the TIE, and many people think that having the number means they're resident. It doesn't. You can have an NIE without a TIE – for example, if you're buying a holiday home but not moving. But if you're moving for more than 90 days, you need both: the NIE for admin, and the TIE for residency.
For EU citizens (including Irish passport holders), the situation is different: they register for a green certificate (Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión) instead of a TIE. British citizens can no longer use the old green certificate – it doesn't confirm your current residency status and can cause problems with insurance and banking.
A common mistake is to assume that getting your NIE is enough. It isn't. You must also complete the residency process, which involves a visa (unless you're covered by the Withdrawal Agreement) and then the TIE application. Start early – appointments can take weeks.
People also ask
›Do I need a NIE before a TIE?
Yes, you'll need a NIE for financial transactions, and you'll be issued one as part of the TIE process. But having a NIE doesn't mean you're resident – you still need to apply for the TIE separately.
›Can I get a TIE without a visa?
No. For British citizens moving to Spain, you need a visa (such as the non-lucrative or digital nomad visa) before you can apply for a TIE. The only exception is if you were already resident before 1 January 2021, under the Withdrawal Agreement.
›Is the green certificate still valid for UK citizens?
No. Since Brexit, the green certificate (Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión) is no longer valid for British citizens. You need a TIE instead.
