In short
Around 9,500 people live in Benahavís, and about 60% of them are foreign nationals – with UK citizens the largest group at a quarter of all foreign residents. You will meet British and international neighbours through the area's international schools, golf clubs and beach clubs, and the village's many restaurants serve as social hubs. There is no single British club, but the broader Costa del Sol has ample English-speaking networks.

Benahavís is a mountain village with a wealthy, international character – a place where gated golf communities meet cobbled streets and whitewashed houses. For British buyers and movers, the key thing to know is that you are joining a large, established foreign community, but one that sits alongside a very Spanish town centre. This page looks at what that means in practice: who lives here, where you can meet people and what support exists in English.
Size of the Community
Benahavís registered 9,472 residents on 1 January 2025, according to the INE municipal register. The town is clearly international: around 60% of residents are foreign nationals, with UK citizens forming the largest group at 25.5% of registered foreigners (IECA, 2025).
The foreign population is spread across the municipality's residential developments – La Zagaleta, El Madroñal, La Quinta, Los Arqueros, Los Flamingos and Monte Mayor among them – while the village centre itself remains more traditionally Spanish. This means you are likely to hear English spoken at school gates, golf clubhouses and supermarket car parks in the urbanisations, but less so in the village's own bars and shops.
Where Brits Meet
There is no single "British club" in Benahavís, but the international community gathers around several anchors:
- Schools: Creators International School Benahavís, Atalaya International School (in nearby Atalaya) and Atlas American School Estepona all serve international families and act as social hubs.
- Golf courses: Benahavís has more than a dozen courses within the municipality, including La Quinta Golf & Country Club, Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club and Flamingos Golf Club. Social calendars at these clubs draw residents together.
- Restaurants: Benahavís is known as the "dining room of the Costa del Sol," with over thirty restaurants in a small area. Many have English-language menus and regular clientele.
- Beach clubs and leisure: The coast at San Pedro Alcántara and Puerto Banús is roughly 10–15 minutes' drive, where many international residents socialize.
For new arrivals, the most practical first step is often introductions through estate agents, school parent groups or neighbours in your urbanisation.
Online Groups
Publicly listed online groups for Benahavís residents are limited, and there is no official municipal forum. In practice, much of the local social coordination happens through:
- WhatsApp groups organised by urbanisation or school;
- Facebook groups for the wider Costa del Sol (e.g., Marbella-based expat groups);
- Community newsletters from residential associations.
To find these, ask your estate agent, urbanisation's admin office or school reception for a referral. The town hall's website does not currently host a public community directory.
English-Language Help
The town hall (Ayuntamiento) does not publicise a dedicated English-language help desk. In practice, English is widely spoken in businesses catering to international residents, including estate agents, lawyers and medical concierge services.
The nearest British consulate is the Vice-Consulate in Málaga, about 70 km away. For official paperwork, the Madrid Embassy and Málaga Vice-Consulate offer online appointment booking.
Schools are often the most effective source of English-language support for families, as admissions staff routinely handle international enrolments.
Community vs Integration
Benahavís offers a genuinely international environment where an English-speaking newcomer can settle comfortably. However, it is also a functioning Andalusian town – the village centre has centuries-old streets, local fiestas and a Spanish-speaking population. Integration into Spanish life is possible but takes deliberate effort, especially if you live in a gated community where daily interactions are predominantly with other international residents.
For those seeking authentic cultural immersion, the village's own events – such as the annual gastronomy fair – provide easy entry points. For those who prefer an international bubble, the option is equally available.
Costa Bridge View
Benahavís suits British buyers who want the reassurance of a large international community alongside the charm of a real Andalusian village. The trade-off is that the "community" is dispersed across exclusive residential areas with cars needed for most social activities, while the village centre itself offers a more local, Spanish experience. If you are looking for a ready-made British social circle with step-free access to golf clubs, schools and beach clubs, you will find it here. If you want a tightly knit village life with daily Spanish interactions, you will need to make more of an effort. Check the town hall's current services in English, and talk to current residents before committing.
