In short

To get healthcare in Reus, register on the padrón at the town hall, then apply for your TSI health card at your local CAP. Your GP will be at one of the CAPs like CAP Sant Pere or CAP Reus 2. For emergencies, call 112 or go to Hospital Universitari Sant Joan de Reus, about 2 km away. For private care, MQ Centre Reus is an option.

Quick facts

  • The nearest public hospital is Hospital Universitari Sant Joan de Reus, about 2 km from the city centre.
  • Local health centres include CAP Sant Pere, CAP Reus 2, CAP Reus 3, and CAP Reus 4.
  • The health card is called TSI (Tarjeta Sanitària Individual), and you must register on the padrón first.
  • Urgent care is at Hospital Universitari Sant Joan de Reus, and 112 is the emergency number.
  • The private option is MQ Centre Reus, without recommending it.

Reus's public healthcare is solid for a city of its size, with a modern university hospital and several local health centres. The key is to register on the padrón as soon as you arrive, then apply for your TSI health card. This page covers everything from entitlement to emergencies.

Public Healthcare and Who Qualifies

Spain's public healthcare system (SNS) provides free or low-cost care to residents. In Catalonia, the health service is CatSalut. You qualify if you are:

  • A resident with a Spanish social security number (NUSS) and paying into the system (employed, self-employed, or receiving a pension).
  • A resident with a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) for temporary stays.
  • A resident with a certificate of entitlement from your home country (for UK pensioners, this is the S1 form).

If you are moving to Reus permanently, you must register with the town hall (padrón) and then apply for a health card (TSI).

Registering: Padrón to Health Card
  1. Register on the padrón at Reus Town Hall (Ajuntament de Reus). You'll need your passport, proof of address (rental contract or utility bill), and your NIE (foreigner's identification number).
  2. Get a social security number (NUSS) if you don't have one. You can apply at the Spanish Social Security office (Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social) in Reus.
  3. Apply for the TSI (Tarjeta Sanitària Individual) at your local CAP (primary care centre) or online via CatSalut. You'll need your NUSS, padrón certificate, and ID.
  4. Choose your GP (metge de capçalera) at your assigned CAP. You can change it later if you prefer.
Your Local Health Centre

Reus has several primary care centres (CAPs) run by the Catalan health service. The main ones are:

  • CAP Sant Pere – Carrer de Sant Pere, 1
  • CAP Reus 2 – Avinguda de l'Onze de Setembre, 1
  • CAP Reus 3 – Carrer de la Selva del Camp, 1
  • CAP Reus 4 – Carrer de l'Aleixar, 1

Your TSI card will tell you which CAP you're assigned to. You can book appointments online via the CatSalut app or by phone.

Hospitals

Reus has one public hospital:

  • Hospital Universitari Sant Joan de Reus – Avinguda del Doctor Josep Laporte, 1. It's a public hospital with 274 beds, offering a full range of services including emergency care, surgery, and maternity. It's about 2 km from the city centre.

For more specialised care, you may be referred to Hospital Universitari Joan XXIII in Tarragona, about 15 km away.

Emergencies, Urgent Care and Pharmacies
  • Emergency number: 112 (free, 24/7)
  • Urgent care: Hospital Universitari Sant Joan de Reus has a 24-hour emergency department.
  • Pharmacies: There are many pharmacies in Reus, marked with a green cross. They are open Monday to Friday 9:00–13:30 and 16:30–20:00, with some open on Saturdays. For out-of-hours, check the rota (farmàcies de guàrdia) in local newspapers or on the town hall website.
Private Healthcare and Insurance

Private healthcare is available in Reus. The main private hospital is:

  • MQ Centre Reus – Carrer de la Selva del Camp, 1. It's a private hospital with 47 beds, offering a wide range of services including emergency care, surgery, and outpatient clinics. It's part of the Sagessa group.

Many expats take out private health insurance to avoid waiting lists and get faster access to specialists. Popular insurers include Sanitas, Adeslas, and Mapfre. You can also pay out-of-pocket for private consultations.

Costa Bridge View

Reus offers solid public healthcare through its CAPs and the Sant Joan hospital, which is well-equipped for a city of its size. The main trade-off is that for highly specialised care, you'll need to travel to Tarragona or Barcelona. Private healthcare is a good option if you want faster access to specialists or English-speaking doctors. Registering on the padrón is the first step, so do that as soon as you arrive. Overall, Reus is a good choice for families and retirees who want a quieter base with decent healthcare nearby.
