In short
La Nucía has two state primary schools — CEIP Muixara and CEIP Sant Rafael — plus a state secondary instituto in town. For a British curriculum, Elian's British School (ages 1–18) is also in La Nucía. State enrolment closes in late April and starts with registering on the municipal padrón; apply directly to Elian's via its website.
Quick facts
- CEIP Muixara and CEIP Sant Rafael are La Nucía's two state primary schools, covering Infantil and Primaria.
- La Nucía's state secondary instituto is in the town itself, with a second instituto planned as part of the new school campus.
- Elian's British School, a private British-curriculum school for ages 1–18, is in La Nucía itself.
- State schools in La Nucía teach in the Valencian Community's plurilingual model, using Valencian and Spanish with English as a foreign language.
- Enrolment for state schools closes in late April each year, and parents must be registered on the municipal padrón (local census) to apply.
Around 3,000 pupils attend school in La Nucía, and the town now has everything from state primary places to a British-curriculum school on its own streets. This section is for British families weighing a move, buying a home, or already here and sorting out schooling. The key point: La Nucía's state schools follow the Valencian plurilingual system, while Elian's British School offers an English-taught route for ages 1–18 without leaving town.
How the System Works
Spanish state education has three stages you will meet: Infantil (ages 3–6), Primaria (6–12) and compulsory ESO secondary (12–16), followed by optional Bachillerato (16–18). In the Valencian Community, schools are run by the regional government (Conselleria d'Educació), with the town hall's education department (lanucia.es/Concejalia-8-Educacion) handling local support, transport and school-building plans.
La Nucía's schools are organised in the usual Spanish way: children attend their catchment CEIP (primary) and then move to the secondary instituto. Around 3,000 pupils were enrolled at the start of the most recent school year, according to the town hall.
Language of Instruction
State schools in the Valencian Community teach in a plurilingual model using Valencian and Spanish, with English as the main foreign language. La Nucía's schools take part in regional Valencian projects — for example, 100 pupils from CEIP Muixara and CEIP Sant Rafael joined pupils from Benimantell for the "L'Escola Canta 2023" concert at the Auditori. So if your children attend state school, expect Valencian to be part of daily life, not just a timetabled subject.
Elian's British School, by contrast, teaches in English with Spanish as a subject, following an integrated British and Spanish curriculum.
Local State Schools
La Nucía has two state primary schools, both of which took part in the L'Escola Canta 2023 project:
- CEIP Muixara
- CEIP Sant Rafael
Both are CEIPs (Colegios de Educación Infantil y Primaria), covering Infantil and Primaria.
A third CEIP is in the pipeline. The town hall announced in December 2023 that construction would begin in 2024, with two classrooms for two-year-olds, six Infantil classes, twelve Primaria classes, a gym and a dining room with its own kitchen serving 400 pupils in two sittings. The same project includes a second secondary instituto. Check the town hall's education page for the current construction status.
For secondary, La Nucía has one state instituto, and a second is planned as part of the new school campus.
International and Private Schools
Elian's British School of La Nucía is the town's private British school, in the town itself. Founded in 2002, it teaches ages 1–18 with an integrated British and Spanish curriculum, offers the IB Diploma in Sixth Form, and is part of the Dukes Education group. It describes itself as a private bilingual school offering British international education in English.
Because it is in La Nucía, there is no commute to Benidorm or Alfaz del Pi for a British education. Fees are set privately; the school's website publishes the current fee schedule and open-day dates.
Enrolment: Dates and Documents
For state schools, enrolment for the following September runs in spring. The town hall announced that enrolment closed on Friday 28 April — for the 2023 admission round — and the same late-April pattern applies each year. The exact dates change annually and are published on the town hall's education page and the regional government's admissions portal.
The essential first step is registering on the municipal padrón (the local census) at the town hall — your child's school place is allocated on the basis of your registered address. You will also need the child's passport or NIE, birth certificate and vaccination record, though the education department's website lists exactly what to bring. If you arrive outside the normal window, contact the education department directly for a late admission.
For Elian's, apply directly through the school's website; the admissions section explains the process and open-day invitations for prospective families.
Nurseries (0–3)
For under-threes, provision in La Nucía is limited. The planned third CEIP includes two classrooms for two-year-olds, which will add state places for that age group. Elian's takes children from age one in its Early Years section.
For a public 0–3 nursery (escoleta), check the town hall's education page, which lists current provision across the municipality.
Adult Education
The town hall's education page is the starting point for adult education, including language classes and vocational training. La Nucía also has a Seu Universitària (university extension) which runs courses, seminars and cultural activities in the town — worth checking for evening classes and talks. For Valencian regional adult education, the Conselleria d'Educació website lists official programmes.
For British Families
- If you want a British-curriculum education without a daily drive, Elian's is in the town — but it is a private school with fees set by the school.
- If you choose state schools, expect Valencian as a teaching language. Children adapt quickly, but older children arriving mid-secondary may find the switch harder.
- Register on the padrón before the enrolment window — it determines your catchment school.
- The third primary school and second instituto, once built, will increase state capacity. Until then, demand for places is managed through the spring admissions round.
- For university entry, British families often weigh the IB (offered at Elian's) against Spanish Bachillerato (at the state instituto).
Costa Bridge View
La Nucía is one of the few inland Costa Blanca towns with a British school actually inside the town, which makes it a strong choice for families who want continuity of curriculum. The trade-off is cost: Elian's is private, and the state alternative means adapting to a Valencian-Spanish bilingual model that is very different from an English curriculum. Younger children thrive in this switch; teenagers often find it harder. The planned third primary school and second instituto show the town is responding to a growing young population, but state places are still allocated through the spring round. La Nucía suits families who either commit to the state system early, or budget for the private route.
