Decide

Is Albox right for you?

Who it suits

  • FamiliesModerate

Two public secondary schools and two public primary schools, teaching in Spanish, plus a music conservatory. No international school nearby. Children integrate quickly in a Spanish-majority town.

  • RetireesGood

Low costs, a town-centre health centre, everyday shopping and a British community. The hospital is ~25 km away and a car is needed for most trips.

  • Remote workersModerate

Cheap space and a town with services. Fibre is better in town than in the scattered country houses; check the address.

  • Second-home ownersLimited

Inland and ~120 km from Almería airport, so less suited to short beach breaks. Empty country houses need someone to watch them.

  • Holiday-rental investorsLimited

Little tourist demand inland. Andalusian VFT registration and the national rental register apply.

The trade-offs

What works

  • Very low property prices, with median asking prices under €900/m² (RealAdvisor, Aug 2026).
  • A real Spanish town with shops, banks, schools, a health centre and a bus station.
  • Established British community and English-speaking professionals.
  • Coach links to Almería, Huércal-Overa, Baza and Granada.
  • Public hospital in Huércal-Overa, ~25 km away.

What to weigh up

  • Inland, not coastal. Vera is ~35 km and Mojácar ~50 km away.
  • Very hot summers and cold winter nights in poorly insulated country houses.
  • No train, and airports are ~120 km or more away.
  • A history of irregular rural builds in the valley. Legal checks are essential.
  • You will need Spanish for daily life.

The place

About Albox

Albox is the largest town in the middle Almanzora valley, with 12,799 registered residents (INE padrón, 1 Jan 2025). It is an inland town, not a coastal one. Vera, the nearest coastal municipality, is ~35 km away by road and Mojácar ~50 km. The town spreads along a dry riverbed below the hills, with many residents living in outlying hamlets and country houses.
It is a working Spanish town first. Around three in ten residents are foreign (IECA, 2025), and the UK is the largest foreign nationality. INE counted 1,238 UK-born residents in 2022. Albox has the shops, banks, schools, health centre and bus station that smaller villages around it lack, so it acts as the service centre for British residents across the valley.
For British buyers, Albox offers some of the lowest prices in this guide, with a real town on the doorstep. The trade-offs are heat in summer, distance from the beach and airports, and the valley's history of homes built without proper planning permission, which makes careful legal checks essential.
