Eating out is cheap — a menú del día is €10–15 — but summer electricity and water bills climb, and buying costs add 12–14% on resale properties.
Quick facts
- A couple's monthly budget excluding rent comes to about €900, covering groceries, utilities, transport, eating out and health cover.

Benitachell, home to 4,911 registered residents, and the Cumbre del Sol urbanisation above it cost noticeably less to live in than Jávea or Moraira, but the savings come with two non-negotiables: a car and a budget that flexes with the seasons. For a couple, day-to-day spending excluding rent comes to roughly €900 a month. This page breaks down where that money goes and the bills newcomers typically forget.
Monthly Budget
For a couple living in Benitachell or Cumbre del Sol, a realistic monthly budget excluding rent looks like this:
| Item | Monthly cost |
|---|---|
| Groceries | €350 |
| Electricity | €110 |
| Water | €40 |
| Internet & mobile | €50 |
| Car running costs (fuel, insurance, maintenance) | €150 |
| Eating out | €100 |
| Private health cover (optional) | €100 |
| Total | €900 |
The two biggest variables are electricity and the car. Both climb in summer, when air conditioning runs and you drive more. Private health cover is optional — the local consultorio (GP clinic) is free at the point of use — but many expats budget for it to skip waiting lists.
Rent
Long-term rentals in Benitachell start at around €550 a month on idealista. A typical one-bedroom apartment runs about €700, two-bedroom apartments €700–900, and a three-bedroom villa with pool €1,000–1,500. Cumbre del Sol commands the premium: sea-view apartments there start around €200,000 to buy and villas €400,000+, while the village centre has traditional townhouses from about €120,000.
The gap with neighbours is real. Property prices in Benitachell averaged €3,335 per m² in August 2025, against €4,250 in Moraira. Buying costs add roughly 12–14% on resale properties, so factor that into any purchase.
Household Bills
Electricity is the big one: €80–150 a month for a typical household, at the top of the range in summer (air conditioning) and winter (heating). Solar panels cut this significantly. Water runs €30–50 a month, but pool refills and garden irrigation push it up. Fibre broadband and mobile come to €40–60 a month, with mobile plans from €15–30.
Groceries
A couple shopping carefully spends €300–400 a month. Mercadona, Lidl and Consum are the main supermarkets, and the Wednesday market in Benitachell sells fresh produce. Prices are broadly comparable to or lower than northern Europe.
Transport
A car is essential — there is no rail or TRAM stop in Benitachell and no regular bus line serving the village. The nearest TRAM Line 9 stop is Teulada, in the neighbouring municipality. The one exception is the council's free beach bus to Cala del Moraig, which runs in July and August.
The AP7 motorway is about 10 km away, Jávea ~10 km, Dénia ~20 km, and Alicante–Elche airport ~95 km. Budget for fuel, Spanish car insurance and the biennial ITV (MOT) test.
Eating Out
A menú del día (lunch set menu) costs €10–15 including a drink, and a main course in a casual restaurant around €15. Dinner at a mid-range restaurant runs €15–25 per person, coffee €1.50–2.50 and a glass of wine €2–4. Restaurante La Cumbre is one of the well-reviewed spots on the urbanisation.
Seasonal Effects
Summer is the expensive season. Electricity bills hit the top of the range as air conditioning runs, and holiday rental prices spike — weekly rates in summer can exceed what you'd pay monthly off-season. Water use climbs with pool refills and garden irrigation. The free beach bus only runs in July and August, so outside those months you drive everywhere.
Costs Newcomers Miss
- Buying costs of 12–14% on resale properties
- Pool maintenance and the water to refill it
- Car insurance, ITV and fuel — a second car doubles this
- Private health cover if you want faster access than the public consultorio
- Community fees in the Cumbre del Sol urbanisations — ask the community president or your agent for the exact figure
- Higher summer electricity and water bills
Costa Bridge View
Benitachell and Cumbre del Sol suit couples and remote workers who want sea views, quiet and better value than Jávea or Moraira — the €900-a-month budget excluding rent is realistic for two. The trade-offs are real: without a car you're stranded, public transport is minimal, and summer bills and holiday rental demand push costs up. It's not the place for walkable amenities or nightlife. If you're happy to drive for everything and want your money to go further on the northern Costa Blanca, this is one of the more sensible bases.
