The place

About Benitachell

El Poble Nou de Benitatxell (Benitachell in Spanish) is a small municipality of 4,911 registered residents (INE padrón, 1 Jan 2025) on the Marina Alta coast, between Jávea to the north and Moraira to the south. The village itself sits inland on a plateau of vines and almond terraces. Most foreign residents live in the urbanisations towards the sea, above all Cumbre del Sol, which climbs to the cliffs above the Mediterranean.
Around six in ten registered residents hold a foreign nationality (INE, 2022), and British nationals are the largest single group: 1,270 were registered in 2022 (INE). The Lady Elizabeth School, a British-curriculum school taking pupils from age 2 to 18, has a campus in Cumbre del Sol, which brings families as well as retirees.
The coast here is short and steep: about 2 km of cliffs with coves such as Cala del Moraig rather than long sandy beaches. Homes are mostly detached villas with sea views, priced at the upper end of the Costa Blanca. It is a quiet place to live, but you will drive for almost everything beyond the village shops.
