If you are moving to San Fulgencio or La Marina, healthcare is straightforward once you are registered on the padrón. The public system covers residents through two local health centres, with hospital care in Torrevieja. This page explains who qualifies, how to register, and where to go for treatment.

Public Healthcare and Who Qualifies

Spain's public healthcare system is available to residents who are registered on the padrón and either work and pay social security, or are covered by a valid S1 form (for UK pensioners) or a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC/GHIC) for temporary stays. As a resident, you will need to register with the local health centre to obtain a health card. The two public health centres in San Fulgencio are part of the Torrevieja health department of the Conselleria de Sanitat, the regional health authority.

Registering: Padrón to Health Card

First, register on the padrón at the town hall (Plaza Constitución, 26, 03177 San Fulgencio, tel 966 79 42 01). You will need your passport, NIE, and proof of address. Once you have the padrón certificate, take it to your local health centre to apply for a health card (SIP or tarjeta sanitaria). The health centre will assign you a GP and provide access to public services.

Private Healthcare and Insurance

For private care, Clinica La Marina is a private doctors practice at Calle Madrid, 1, phone 966 796 380. It offers general practice services. There is also a dental clinic, Mar Serena, in the Centro Comercial Bahía del Sol. Many residents take out private health insurance for faster access to specialists, but this is optional.

Costa Bridge View

The public healthcare system in San Fulgencio is well-organised, with two local health centres covering the village and La Marina. The main trade-off is that hospital care is 20 km away in Torrevieja, and waiting times for specialists can be long. The private clinic offers a convenient alternative for those who want quicker appointments. For most routine care, the local centres are sufficient. If you have a chronic condition, consider private insurance or a specialist in Torrevieja.
