Decide

Is Torrox right for you?

Who it suits

  • FamiliesModerate

Five primary and two secondary schools in the municipality (IECA, 2023-24), teaching in Spanish. International schooling means a long drive, for example to Almuñécar International School in Granada province.

  • RetireesGood

Flat promenade, mild winters, a public health centre in town and the public hospital in Vélez-Málaga (~15 km). Large northern European community.

  • Remote workersGood

Year-round town with lower costs than the western Costa del Sol. Rents average €13.0/m² a month (idealista, Sept 2026).

  • Second-home ownersGood

Plenty of beachside apartments that are easy to lock up and leave. Málaga airport is ~55 km away by motorway.

  • Holiday-rental investorsModerate

Busy summer season and a long winter season of northern European visitors. Torrox was declared an Andalusian tourist municipality in 2025. Rentals must be registered with the Andalusian tourism register.

The trade-offs

What works

  • Cheaper than Nerja and the western Costa del Sol, with a choice of beach apartment or village house.
  • A year-round town with a large, settled international community.
  • The public hospital in Vélez-Málaga is ~15 km away.
  • Calmer, more Spanish feel than the big resorts west of Málaga.
  • Good coastal bus links along the Axarquía.

What to weigh up

  • No train. Málaga is ~50 km away and the airport ~55 km.
  • Torrox Costa is built-up, with dense apartment blocks.
  • Few international school options nearby.
  • The village is steep and parking is tight.
  • Growing fast, which is pushing up prices and rents.

The place

About Torrox

Torrox has 22,015 registered residents (INE padrón, 1 Jan 2025) and is growing fast. The municipality has two halves. Torrox village (Torrox Pueblo) is a traditional white town on a ridge a short drive inland. Torrox Costa, below it, is a beach resort of apartment blocks, a long promenade and urbanisations such as El Peñoncillo, Centro Internacional and El Morche.
The foreign community is large and mixed. Germans are the biggest foreign group, at 22.9% of registered foreign residents (IECA, 2025), and Torrox is known in Germany for it. British residents are also well established, many of them in the hills and countryside behind the coast. No recent dated count of British residents was found.
The eastern Costa del Sol is calmer than Marbella or Fuengirola, and Torrox sits between Nerja (~10 km) and Vélez-Málaga (~15 km). Asking prices average €3,190/m² (idealista, Sept 2026), below Nerja. The main drawbacks are the lack of any train and the drive to Málaga airport (~55 km).

Practicalities

Practicalities

Getting there

  • Coastal municipality in the Axarquía, east of Málaga. Nerja is ~10 km east, Vélez-Málaga ~15 km west and Málaga ~50 km west.
  • The A-7 Autovía del Mediterráneo runs above the coast, with the old N-340 along the shore. Málaga–Costa del Sol airport is ~55 km away.
  • No railway anywhere in the Axarquía; the Málaga Cercanías does not run east of Málaga. ALSA coaches serve the coast road to Nerja, Torre del Mar and Málaga, and the town runs two local bus lines.
