Healthcare in Salou

Access to Catalonia's public health system (CatSalut) is tied to municipal residency. Before you can see a GP or apply for a health card, you must register on the padrón (municipal register) at Salou town hall. Once registered, you apply for the Targeta Sanitària Individual (TSI)—the individual health card that acts as your passport to appointments, prescriptions and hospital referrals. You can start the TSI application at your assigned Primary Care Centre (CAP). Bring your empadronamiento certificate, passport or NIE, and any relevant documentation such as an S1 form if you are a pensioner, or proof of social security contributions if you are working. If you are not yet in the contributory system, staff will advise on whether you qualify as a resident entitled to care under Catalan law.

The first step is always the padrón. Without it, you cannot obtain a TSI card or register for La Meva Salut. Do not delay empadronamiento. Once you have your empadronamiento certificate, take it along with your passport or NIE to your assigned CAP to start the TSI application. Post-Brexit British nationals often need an S1 (for pensioners), proof of employment, or private insurance to cover any gap before public entitlement is confirmed. The CAP staff will guide you through the process.

CAP Salou is the main public health centre for residents. It handles GP appointments (medicina de familia), nursing services, paediatrics, chronic disease management and referrals to hospital specialists.

Appointments can be booked by telephone or, once you have your credentials, through the La Meva Salut portal. For urgent matters outside these hours, the out-of-hours primary care service (CUAP Salou) covers the municipality. Note that while CUAP Salou exists as the urgent primary care hub, you should confirm current opening hours directly with the centre or via 061, as timetables can vary seasonally.

Salou is a high-tourism municipality, and the Catalan health department historically reinforces primary care hours on the Costa Daurada during July and August (sometimes extending into mid-September). CAP Salou typically expands its operational capacity in line with this summer programme. If you are visiting or newly resident during peak season, expect busier waiting rooms and, on the positive side, longer opening windows.

Once registered at CAP Salou, set up La Meva Salut, the Catalan digital health portal. You must request activation in person at the CAP. Once live, you can:

• Download test results and clinical reports
• View and print your medication plan
• Request, change or cancel appointments

It is worth doing this early; it saves repeated phone calls and gives you a written record of your interactions. Public-sector staff may have limited English. Bring a Spanish or Catalan speaker to complex appointments, or use the translation services sometimes available through your insurer or local British community groups.

Salou does not have its own public hospital. For A&E, specialist outpatient clinics, surgery and inpatient care, residents are referred to:

• Hospital Universitari Joan XXIII, Tarragona — the main public hospital for the region, roughly 10 km from Salou.
• Hospital Sant Joan de Reus, Reus — a public hospital approximately 11 km away.

Journey times depend on traffic, particularly in summer. If you require planned specialist treatment, your CAP GP will issue a referral and usually book the first appointment.

For life-threatening emergencies, call 112. For urgent health advice, the medical helpline 061 (Salut Respon) operates around the clock and can direct you to the nearest appropriate service, including COVID protocols. CUAP Salou provides urgent primary care services for the municipality; confirm current opening hours via 061 or the centre itself.

Pharmacies (farmàcies) are plentiful in Salou. A duty pharmacy system ensures that at least one pharmacy in the area is open 24 hours. Look for the rotating green cross and the list of farmàcies de guàrdia posted in shop windows or on the local pharmacy association website.

Many British residents in Salou hold private health insurance, either as a bridge before public system registration or as a permanent parallel choice. Private clinics in and around Salou offer faster access to diagnostics and English-speaking staff. MS Doctors, for example, advertises emergency telephone coverage for Salou, Cambrils and La Pineda. Major insurers such as Sanitas also list general medicine consultations in Salou through their provider network.

If you are buying property and need insurance for a visa or residency application, ensure the policy meets Spanish immigration requirements and that the provider has local clinics or agreements with hospitals in Tarragona or Reus.

Salou's public healthcare is reliable but requires paperwork and patience, especially in summer when tourism strains resources. The lack of a local hospital means travelling to Tarragona or Reus for serious care, but routine care at CAP Salou is solid. Private insurance is popular among British residents for faster access and English-speaking staff, and can bridge the gap before public entitlement is confirmed. Salou suits those who are organised, can handle Catalan bureaucracy, and don't mind a short drive for hospital care. If you prefer immediate appointments and English-speaking doctors, budget for private cover.
