About La Manga

La Manga — La Manga del Mar Menor — is a narrow sandbar roughly 21 km long and, on average, about 100 metres wide. It separates the Mediterranean from the Mar Menor, the large, shallow and unusually calm lagoon behind it. Many visitors describe the two coasts as 'two seas in one place'.
Development began in the 1960s, and the strip is now one of the most densely built stretches of the Murcia coast, dominated by apartment blocks and holiday complexes. It is split between two municipalities: the southern end belongs to Cartagena, the longer northern section to San Javier.
For British relocation planners, La Manga is a second-home and holiday-let market rather than a year-round community. It is quiet outside the summer season, and much of the housing stock is seasonal. Buyers looking for year-round life often base themselves instead in Cartagena or the Mar Menor towns.

Practicalities

Practicalities

Getting there

  • A sandbar in the Region of Murcia, running about 21 km between Cabo de Palos (south) and the Punta del Mojón (north).
  • Divided between two municipalities: the southern section is in Cartagena, the northern section in San Javier.
  • Separates the Mediterranean from the Mar Menor lagoon; the lagoon is shallow, warm and unusually calm.
  • Road: reached via the RM-12 from Cartagena or San Javier; a car is effectively essential.
  • No railway on the strip; nearest stations are in Cartagena and Murcia.
