About San Javier

San Javier is a municipality rather than a single town. It includes the inland town of San Javier itself, the Mar Menor beach resort of Santiago de la Ribera and the golf development at Roda, all within a few kilometres of one another.
The area is best known for its long association with aviation — the former Murcia–San Javier airport was here, and the town remains home to the Spanish Air Force's general academy. Commercial flights moved to Murcia–Corvera in 2019, and the old airport is now a military base.
For British relocation planners, San Javier combines a year-round Spanish town with beach access at Santiago de la Ribera and one of the region's public hospitals. It is a practical base on the Mar Menor, less seasonal than La Manga and better served than the smaller lagoon towns.

Practicalities

Practicalities

Getting there

  • On the northern shore of the Mar Menor, in the Region of Murcia, roughly midway between Murcia city and Cartagena.
  • Includes the inland town of San Javier, the coastal resort of Santiago de la Ribera and the Roda golf area.
  • Road: AP-7 and RM-19 motorway access; the RM-19 joins the A-30 towards Murcia–Corvera airport.
  • No railway. Bus and car are the practical options; the nearest station is Torre-Pacheco (~15 km) on the Murcia–Cartagena line.
  • The former Murcia–San Javier airport closed to commercial traffic in January 2019 and now operates as a military air base.
