In short
For admin in San Javier, start with the padrón at the town hall (Plaza de España 3, 968 57 37 00) – it's free and unlocks health and other services. Use the OVC at sede.sanjavier.es for certificates, taxes, and notifications. For your TIE, you'll need to travel to the extranjería in Murcia, about 45 km away. Book appointments online or by phone.
Featured listings are paid placements.
If you're moving to San Javier, the padrón (empadronamiento) is your first official step. It's the municipal register that proves you live here, and it unlocks access to local health services, schooling, and many other procedures. The good news: it's free and straightforward, and the town hall has made much of it available online.
The padrón is the official record of residents in San Javier. You must register if you plan to live in the municipality for more than six months. It's free, and you'll need to do it at the Ayuntamiento (town hall) at Plaza de España 3. The town hall's online citizen office (Oficina Virtual del Contribuyente, or OVC) lets you consult your padrón record and obtain a volante de empadronamiento (a certificate of residence) in real time. This certificate is often required for other procedures, such as applying for a NIE or registering with the health service.
The Ayuntamiento de San Javier is the main administrative hub. It's at Plaza de España 3, 30730 San Javier, and you can call 968 57 37 00. The town hall houses most municipal offices, including the padrón office and the OVC. For many tasks, you can use the OVC online at sede.sanjavier.es, which allows you to book appointments, pay taxes, and access official notifications. If you prefer in-person help, the town hall is the place to go, but you'll need to book a cita previa (appointment) in advance.
As a British citizen, you'll need a NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) for most financial and legal matters, and a TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) if you're a resident. The TIE is issued by the Policía Nacional or extranjería office. The nearest extranjería office is in Murcia city, about 45 km from San Javier. You'll need to book an appointment online through the Spanish government's extranjería portal. The process can take several weeks, so start early. For the NIE, you can also apply at the extranjería office, but some procedures can be done via a gestor or online.
For padrón registration, you'll need to book a cita previa at the town hall. You can do this via the OVC or by phone. Bring your passport, proof of address (such as a rental contract or property deed), and, if applicable, your NIE. For the TIE, you'll need your passport, proof of residence (padrón certificate), and a completed application form. Always check the specific requirements on the official websites before you go.
The OVC at sede.sanjavier.es supports electronic certificates and Cl@ve, the Spanish government's identity system. You can obtain a digital certificate through the National Mint (FNMT) or use Cl@ve to access many online services. The OVC also allows you to validate and compare electronic documents. This is useful for signing documents and accessing tax records online.
The OVC is your main portal for local taxes. You can view your tax records, pay recibos (bills), and see the fiscal calendar. The Ayuntamiento manages taxes like IBI (property tax) and local rates. You can also set up direct debits for your taxes through the OVC. Official notifications, such as tax assessments, are delivered to your 'Bandeja notificaciones' (notification tray) in the OVC, so check it regularly.
If you're moving to San Javier, you can use your UK driving licence for up to six months after becoming a resident. After that, you'll need to exchange it for a Spanish licence. The process is handled by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), and you'll need to book an appointment at a DGT office. The nearest DGT office is in Murcia city. For vehicle registration, you'll need to pay the transfer tax and register your car with the local traffic office. This is a separate process from the padrón.
San Javier's admin is manageable if you're organised. The town hall's online services are a real plus, letting you handle many tasks without queuing. The main drawback is the distance to the extranjería in Murcia for your TIE, which means a day trip. But the padrón is quick and free, and the OVC makes tax payments straightforward. This town suits people who are comfortable with a bit of bureaucracy and want a quieter, more local base on the Mar Menor.
