About Águilas

Águilas is the southernmost town in the Region of Murcia, sitting close to the boundary with Almería province. It is a working Spanish town with a fishing harbour, a sizeable resident population and a long seafront, rather than a purpose-built resort.
The town wraps around two sheltered bays — the Levante and Poniente beaches — which give it a genuinely usable coastline in most weather. Its Carnival is one of the best known in the region, and the town has a distinctive local character shaped by fishing and, historically, mineral exports.
For British relocation planners, Águilas is one of the more affordable and more Spanish options on the Costa Cálida. It has a Renfe station on the Murcia–Lorca–Águilas line (trains suspended since 2021, replacement buses run), a health centre and full town services, but it is a longer drive from Murcia–Corvera airport than the Mar Menor towns.

Practicalities

Practicalities

Getting there

  • Southernmost municipality in the Region of Murcia, on the Mediterranean close to the Almería provincial boundary.
  • Built around two bays — Playa de Levante and Playa de Poniente — with a working fishing harbour.
  • Road: the RM-11 runs north to Lorca and the A-7 for Murcia; the AP-7 toll motorway (Cartagena–Vera) passes the town, linking east to Mazarrón and Cartagena and south-west to Vera.
  • Rail: Águilas station is the terminus of Renfe Cercanías line C-2 (Murcia–Lorca–Águilas), but no trains have run since October 2021 because of high-speed works; Renfe runs replacement buses. Check Renfe before relying on rail.
  • Airport: Murcia–Corvera (~80 km) is the nearest; Almería (~120 km) is the alternative.
