The place

About Mazarrón

Mazarrón is best understood as two places under one name. Mazarrón town sits a few kilometres inland and is a working Spanish market town, while Puerto de Mazarrón is the coastal half — a resort and fishing harbour with a string of beaches running south towards Bolnuevo.
The municipality has a long mining history, and its coastline is quieter and less built-up than much of the Costa Blanca. Bolnuevo, at the southern end, is known for the Gredas de Bolnuevo — sandstone formations eroded into strange shapes and nicknamed the 'Ciudad Encantada' (Enchanted City).
For British relocation planners, Mazarrón is a value option with a visible but not dominant British presence, concentrated in Puerto de Mazarrón and in the Camposol urbanisation inland. It suits buyers who want a Spanish coastal town rather than an expat enclave.

Practicalities

Practicalities

Getting there

  • Coastal municipality in the south-west of the Region of Murcia, on the Mediterranean.
  • Two main centres: Mazarrón town (inland, market town) and Puerto de Mazarrón (coastal resort and harbour), plus the coastal village of Bolnuevo and the inland Camposol urbanisation.
  • Road: AP-7/A-7 motorway access; the RM-2 and RM-332 connect to Cartagena and Murcia.
  • No railway. Bus services link the town, the port and the larger cities; a car is the practical option.
  • Climate: semi-arid Mediterranean — very warm, dry summers and mild winters.
